T&L: Immersive Learning at CliPS, UKM

Immersive Learning (IL) places students in an interactive learning environment, either physically or virtually, to replicate possible scenarios or to teach particular skills or techniques. IL includes simulations, role play, and virtual learning environments.

Evaluating appropriateness of drug therapy in relation to laboratory results.

At the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, we have established the first Clinical Pharmacy Simulation centre (or known as CliPS) in 2009 to enhance IL for our students. To our knowledge this is the first laboratory of its kind in the Asian region. We have published and presented several research papers related to teaching and learning utilising this facility.

Currently, CliPS equipped with two high-fidelity adult manikins, seven interactive computer based simulation stations and one flip able in- or out-patient pharmacy station. At least 20 simulation setups were designed to mimic the real clinical pharmacy scenarios. These include Pharmacy Specialised Services i.e. Drug Information, Medication Supply, Parenteral Nutrition, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Oncology Pharmacy and Patient Education and Pharmacotherapeutics i.e. Basic Physical Assessment for Pharmacist, Therapeutic Planning and Managing Drug Related Problems.

Bed-sidely identifying and managing drug related problem on heart failure simulated manikin.

Measuring blood pressure and pulse rate on simulator manikin taking multiple cardio-active medications.

Calling the simulated doctor to manage drug information enquiry.

Learning the correct method to administer medication through nasogastric tube.

Setting-up IV drip for selected antibiotics

Preparing and dispensing of medication.

Preparing medication label prior to medication filling.
